When Should My Child Have Their First Eye Exam?

Ask The Eye Doctor - When Should My Child Get Their First Eye Exam

As an optometrist, one of the most frequent questions I encounter from concerned parents is, "When should my child have their first eye exam?" The significance of early and regular eye exams cannot be overstated, particularly considering the rapid developmental changes that occur in the early years of a child's life.

Guidelines for Children's Eye Exam

According to the Alberta Association of Optometrists and the Canadian Association of Optometrists, it's recommended that children have their initial eye examination between the ages of 6-12 months. This early assessment ensures that their vision is developing normally and that there aren't any underlying conditions that could potentially hinder their visual development.

If you have a concern prior to this, please don't hesitate to contact our office sooner. We're happy to see children of any age. If required, we can help you connect with a pediatric ophthalmologist.

After this initial examination, children should ideally undergo comprehensive eye exams every year. These regular check-ups are vital in detecting and addressing potential vision problems that impact their academic and social growth.

What Does Alberta Health Care Cover?

Alberta Health Care fully covers the cost of an annual eye exam for children, ensuring that vision care is accessible and prioritized. Furthermore, should any medical necessities arise - be it eye infections, visual disturbances, or other concerns - these visits are also covered.

Alberta Health Care does not cover the cost of eyeglasses; however, should they be required, we have a large selection of kids' glasses. We also carry flexible frames that are 'almost indestructible.'

In conclusion

Your child's vision is integral to their overall health and development. By adhering to the guidelines set forth by professional associations and taking advantage of the resources available in Alberta, you can ensure that their eyes are given the best care right from the start.
