Image of a healthy eye and an eye with cataracts. Bringing attention to cataract awareness month in Edmonton

Did you know that June is Cataract Awareness Month? At Helio Optometry, we believe in promoting eye health and spreading awareness about vision loss and how to prevent it.

What Are Cataracts?

Cataracts are a common eye condition characterized by the clouding of the lens inside the eye. The lens, which is normally clear, becomes progressively opaque, leading to blurred vision and other visual impairments. Cataracts typically develop slowly over time and can occur in one or both eyes.

The primary cause of cataracts is aging, as the proteins in the lens break down and clump together, obstructing the passage of light. However, other factors can contribute to cataract formation, including:

  1. Genetic factors: Some individuals may have a genetic predisposition to developing cataracts at an earlier age.

  2. Medical conditions: High blood pressure, Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes and certain eye diseases can increase the risk of developing cataracts.

  3. Trauma: Eye injuries or previous eye surgeries can increase the likelihood of cataract formation.

  4. Prolonged Exposure to Sunlight: Overexposure to ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun without adequate eye protection may accelerate cataract development.

  5. Smoking and Alcohol Consumption: These lifestyle factors have been associated with an increased risk of cataracts.

Cataracts can cause various symptoms, including:

  1. Blurry or cloudy vision: Objects may appear hazy or less defined.

  2. Increased sensitivity to light: Bright lights may cause glare or discomfort.

  3. Difficulty seeing at night: Nighttime vision may be particularly challenging.

  4. Fading or yellowing of colours: Colours may appear dull or less vibrant.

  5. Double vision in one eye: Cataracts can cause double vision or multiple images in one eye.

Fortunately, cataracts can be treated effectively through a surgical procedure called cataract surgery. During this procedure, the cloudy lens is replaced with an artificial intraocular lens (IOL), restoring clear vision. Cataract surgery is one of the most common and successful surgical procedures worldwide, with a high rate of patient satisfaction and improved quality of life.
